Background of the Study :
The rapid integration of digital technologies in education has brought forth significant benefits, yet it has also exposed critical vulnerabilities in the infrastructure supporting online learning. In Birnin Kebbi South LGA, Kebbi State, poor internet services have emerged as a major impediment to effective online education in secondary schools. The internet plays a crucial role in delivering educational content, enabling interactive sessions, and providing access to a vast array of digital resources. However, in areas where connectivity is unreliable, students face frequent disruptions that undermine their learning experience (Bello, 2024). Poor internet services lead to interrupted lessons, delayed communication between teachers and students, and diminished access to updated instructional materials. These issues are particularly problematic in secondary schools, where the need for consistent and high-speed connectivity is paramount. In Birnin Kebbi South LGA, infrastructural deficits—combined with limited investment in digital infrastructure—result in a digital divide that disproportionately affects students from less affluent backgrounds. Socio-economic factors further compound these challenges, leaving many students without the necessary technological support to participate effectively in online learning. This study aims to examine the impact of poor internet services on online learning by evaluating how connectivity issues affect student engagement, comprehension, and overall academic performance. The research will also consider the perceptions of both educators and students regarding the quality of internet services and the extent to which these issues interfere with the educational process. By analyzing the relationship between internet connectivity and learning outcomes, the study seeks to identify actionable solutions that can bridge the digital gap and enhance the efficacy of online education. Furthermore, the investigation will explore the potential benefits of alternative technological solutions and infrastructural reforms, while also considering the role of government and community initiatives in mitigating connectivity challenges. With online education becoming increasingly central to academic delivery, understanding the impact of poor internet services is critical for ensuring equitable access to quality education (Oluwaseun, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
The advent of online learning in secondary schools has been accompanied by growing concerns over the quality of internet services in Birnin Kebbi South LGA, Kebbi State. Poor connectivity is a significant barrier that disrupts the delivery of educational content and undermines student engagement. Frequent interruptions during online classes and slow internet speeds prevent students from accessing real-time instruction and collaborating effectively with peers. Teachers have noted that unreliable connectivity not only hampers lesson delivery but also compromises the ability to provide timely feedback and support (Bello, 2024). Inadequate internet services force students to rely on outdated materials, which negatively impacts their academic progress. Moreover, the digital divide—exacerbated by socio-economic disparities—means that students from lower-income backgrounds are particularly disadvantaged. Despite efforts by local authorities to improve infrastructure, the persistent challenges remain unresolved. This study seeks to assess the impact of poor internet services on online learning outcomes by focusing on student engagement, academic performance, and teacher effectiveness. It will examine how infrastructural limitations and socio-economic factors contribute to these issues and explore potential strategies to improve connectivity. The goal is to provide evidence-based recommendations that will help policymakers and educational stakeholders to formulate effective interventions aimed at bridging the digital gap. Additionally, the research will highlight the broader implications of poor internet services on educational equity and quality, emphasizing the urgent need for infrastructural reform in the region (Oluwaseun, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To determine the impact of poor internet services on online learning outcomes.

  2. To identify specific challenges faced by students and educators due to unreliable connectivity.

  3. To recommend infrastructural and policy interventions to enhance internet services.

Research Questions:

  1. How do poor internet services affect student engagement and academic performance?

  2. What challenges do educators encounter when teaching online due to connectivity issues?

  3. What strategies can improve internet service quality in secondary schools?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Poor internet services significantly reduce student engagement in online learning.

  2. Unreliable connectivity negatively impacts the quality of online instruction.

  3. Enhanced internet infrastructure is positively correlated with improved educational outcomes.

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it addresses the critical issue of poor internet services that undermine the effectiveness of online learning in secondary schools. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and infrastructure developers in formulating strategies to overcome connectivity challenges and bridge the digital divide, ultimately improving the overall quality of education (Oluwaseun, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the impact of poor internet services on online learning in secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi South LGA, Kebbi State. It focuses exclusively on internet connectivity issues.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Poor Internet Services: Inadequate and unreliable connectivity that disrupts online activities.

  2. Online Learning: Education delivered via digital platforms and the internet.

  3. Educational Outcomes: Measurable results of the learning process, including engagement and performance.
